When Terence Winter was fired from “Vinyl” earlier this year (and it didn’t really matter, since the show was subsequently canceled) he didn’t waste much time turning toward other gigs. He’s penned by Andy Warhol biopic that will star Jared Leto and now he’s bringing his insight to the gangster’s life to a remake of one of the most important movies in the genre.

Winter, who has famously written for “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” will put his pen on a polish of Jonathan Herman‘s (“Straight Outta Compton“) script for “Scarface.” The long-developing redo, now slated to be directed by Antoine Fuqua, will be set in contemporary Los Angeles, with a Mexican immigrant in the lead role. This probably won’t be Donald Trump’s favorite movie (but then again, he thinks “they don’t make movies like they used to“).
It’s not clear if Fuqua will get this in the can before he reteams with Denzel Washington for “The Equalizer 2” next September, but it sure sounds like all the finishing touches are being put in place so “Scarface” can be ready to roll as soon as possible. [Variety]
