Space Is The Place: Fox & McG Team For Sci Fi Film; Shane Abbess To Helm '7th Day' By Ben Ripley

Regardless of the overall eye-melting shittiness of “Battle: Los Angeles,” the film dominated the box office this past weekend proving that audiences still want to see shit blow up real good, no matter how awful it is. So no wonder then that Fox and McG are teaming up for a sci-fi movie based on a script by the guy who wrote “Doom,” “Horsemen” and “The Expendables.”

Deadline reports the studio picked up a pitch for a sci-fi adventure film by David Callaham that will be set up under McG’s production shingle Wonderland Sound and Vision. While he’s not attached to direct yet, the film will be developed as a possible vehicle for the auteur. Given the talent that’s dovetailing for this we’ll kindly ignore for it now.

In more promising news, Variety reports that Aussie helmer Shane Abbess will direct “7th Day.” Why do we care? The script is by “Source Code” scribe Ben Ripley, and is described by producer Martha De Laurentiis as “‘The Shining‘ on a spaceship.” Abbess and Ripley teamed on the story that will follow “a voyage to establish a new colony in outer space.” Presumably, thinks get very, very weird.

No word yet on when it will get in front of cameras, but we’re always up for more brainy sci-fi.
