Earlier today, the news broke that Sony and Disney have worked out an extension of their previous deal to keep the “Spider-Man” franchise firmly intertwined with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on board to produce one more ‘Spider-Man’ film, as well as another MCU project to feature the character.
However, even with the announcement of the deal, the agreement itself was still unclear. Yes, we know that the deal includes one Sony film and one non-Sony MCU film. And yes, Tom Holland is back. But what about the money aspect? Thankfully, Deadline is here to shed some light on that front.
If you recall, the issue between Sony and Disney had to do with the money that Disney was reportedly asking for in the continuation of the deal. Initially, the first deal included the Mouse House receiving 5% of the gross of the Sony-released Spidey films. However, when the news of the deal falling apart broke, reports of Disney wanting a 50/50 split of financing and box office began floating around.
However, it was later reported that the initial extension offer that Sony passed on was for Disney to co-finance 25% of the film and earn 25% of the gross. And the new Deadline report says that the new deal was completed when Sony finally agreed to this offer. So, for the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 3,’ it appears that Disney has a much larger financial interest in the film than for ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Far From Home.’
“This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes,” said producer Amy Pascal. “This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise and the fans and I’m overjoyed it will continue.”
Details that we’re still unsure about include whether or not Jon Watts will return as the director of the forthcoming sequel (though with this deal in place, it’s a safe bet that he’ll come back) and what the second MCU film for Holland will be under this new deal. Could we see him in a new “Avengers” film or will he show up as a co-star in one of the other Phase 4 or 5 films? Obviously, Marvel Studios and Sony are keeping that info under wraps for now.
The next “Spider-Man” film will arrive in theaters on July 16, 2021.
Tom Holland might have the best response to the news out of anyone, as he posted this Instragam message:
