'Spies in Disguise': Will Smith & Tom Holland Star In The Latest Film From Blue Sky Studios

With “Incredibles 2” finally hitting theaters after 14 years in the making, you may think that Disney is the say-all when it comes to animated family films. Nevertheless, Blue Sky Studios has arrived with the trailer for their upcoming feature “Spies in Disguise” in hopes to prove you wrong, though their efforts may ultimately prove to be unsuccessful.

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time the production company has failed to impress. Although the studio’s main franchise “Ice Age” is undoubtedly a recognizable brand, in terms of quality and critical praise, Blue Sky is a far cry from its contemporaries. The majority of their projects consistently fail to garner worthwhile attention aside from profitable box office returns — the studio’s highest achievement is last year’s “Ferdinand,” which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards.

Whether Blue Sky will finally achieve Pixar levels of success or earn another Oscar nomination with ‘Spies’ is yet to be seen, though the project has surprisingly attracted two bits of A-list Hollywood royalty to voice the main characters. The official synopsis for the film is as follows:

Lance Sterling is the world’s most awesome spy. Cool, charming and super-skilled, saving the world is his occupation. And nobody does it better. Almost the exact opposite of Lance is Walter. Walter is a great mind but perhaps not a great socializer. What he lacks in social skills though, he makes up for in smarts and invention: Walter is the scientific genius who invents the gadgets Lance uses on his missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. And if this odd couple can’t learn to work as a team, the whole world is in peril.

Tom Holland and Will Smith are slated to voice Walter and Lance respectively, with Nick Bruno and Troy Quane operating as co-directors behind the camera. The film c0-stars Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka.

“Spies in Disguise” sneaks into theaters on…well, it was originally slated for, April 19, but now the date is just TBD 2019.
