Another little tidbit today on Spike Jonze and his adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s novel, “Where The Wild Things Are.” Jonze talked to AICN recently and hinted at some of the issues that Warner Bros. had with the film (“[Warners] were expecting a boy and I gave birth to a girl [laughs]. So they just needed their time to sort that out and figure out how they were going to learn to love their new daughter”), but it never sounded outright contentious.
Jonze talked to Rolling Stone however (via The New York Post) and got into a bit more detail on their relationships and it definitely sounds like the director and studio were battling it out at one point and uses the metaphor of a warring couple that almost broke up.
“In the end, they let me finish my movie,” he told Rolling Stone. But “the editing process wasn’t always fun . . . It’s like a couple that’s been fighting and going to counseling. What matters now is that we made it through all of that.” He added, “There was definitely a point in time when [Warner Bros. was] sleeping on the sofa.”
Maybe now that they’re out of the woods and the issues are resolved, Jonze seems to feel better about discussing the battle. We guess those rumors were not baseless, but we’re not eating crow. We simply called for people to calm down and don’t panic until you have the facts, which none of us had at the time.
