Spike Jonze and The Beastie Boys are collaborating one more time. Decades after they worked together on the classic music video for “Sabotage,” the filmmaker is teaming with the rap group to work on a new documentary that will showcase the entire history of the revolutionary artists.
According to Apple, Spike Jonze will produce and direct the documentary, titled “Beastie Boys Story,” which will be heading to the streaming service in April. The doc is co-written by Jonze, who teamed with Beastie members Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.

“I owe Beastie Boys a lot. One time, they pulled me out of a burning ship, and another time they helped me cheat on my college exam to get into Florida State. So, it was a real privilege to get to reunite with them and help them tell their story,” said Jonze.

Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz added, “There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order. Spike is one of those friends. And even when you don’t recognize anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table. Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.”
Before “Beastie Boys Story” arrives on Apple TV+, Jonze will first debut “a special cut” of the film on IMAX screens nationwide (considering the filmmaker’s recent IMAX appointment, it makes sense) on April 3, which is sure to be an event for those that want to see and hear the documentary is a way that they can’t replicate at home. For those that can’t make it to the IMAX showings, the doc will debut in select IMAX® theatres for a limited engagement April 3, before premiering globally on Apple TV+ on April 24.
