Oscar winner Spike Lee (feels right saying that, huh?) is not one to rest on his laurels. After celebrating Sunday night for his first-ever Academy Award win, the filmmaker has just released a brand-new project. Albeit, this probably isn’t the project that film fans were hoping for when they hear that Lee has teamed up with Michael B. Jordan.
That’s right. Michael B. Jordan, who is quickly becoming one of the biggest stars in the world, has teamed up with Spike Lee on a new “short film” (aka commercial) for Coach, titled “Words Matter.” And as you might expect from a film from Lee with that title, the minute-long project highlights the fact that bigotry of all forms still exists in our society, but ultimately, can be conquered with love. It also features Jordan wearing a badass outfit and riding a motorcycle in the desert, so there’s that too.
This Coach ad follows in the footsteps of countless other filmmakers of similar ilk that have made the leap into the world of commercial “shorts.” Recently, we’ve seen the likes of Ridley Scott promote Turkish Airlines on Super Bowl Sunday and Spike Jonze try to sell website creation with Idris Elba. Even though there’s a thick layer of commercialism as a foundation, these are ultimately quick little glimpses at what makes these filmmakers so special. Plus, there’s the chance that the paycheck helps fund bigger, more important projects down the line.
Either way, commercial or “short film,” “Words Matter” is a quick little ditty that can be easily digested and shared appropriately through all the social media around the Internet. So, enjoy!
