Spike Lee To Direct One-Time Michael Mann Project 'Gold'

All the way back in 2011, Michael Mann attached himself to the “Treasure Of The Sierra Madre”-esque Paul Haggis-developed project “Gold.” But it turns out he departed the project a while back, leaving the director’s chair open for none other than Spike Lee.

It seems that after a period of years of being unable to get his non-documentary projects off the ground — like the failed “Inside Man” sequel — Lee has settled back into a rhythm, delivering “Red Hook Summer” last year and his take on “Oldboy” is set to open this fall. If the Patrick Massett and John Zinman-scripted film — based on “the 1993 Bre-X Mineral Corporation mining scandal” — keeps to its expected production timeline, that would make three feature-length fictional films in as many years for Lee. We’ve always been fans of Lee so we’re excited to see him work on the big screen more frequently.

Of course, whether or not “Gold” gets started before the year’s out depends entirely on Lee’s schedule, as he is still in post-production on “Oldboy,” which hits theatres on October 11th.
