“Star Trek: Picard” – to boldly go where…we have gone before?! The trailer for the newest “Star Trek” TV series has arrived just in time for release at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. If we’re counting correctly, “Picard” will be the eighth series of the space-faring franchise. And in case you need a refresher: Gene Roddenberry‘s original show aired in 1966, and “The Next Generation” starring Sir Patrick Stewart ran from 1987 to 1994.

Now, Stewart will be stepping back into the iconic role (and impressively high boots) of Captain of the USS Enterprise. The last audiences saw of Picard was in the 2002 film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” when he tossed the torch to Captain Riker and his goatee to command the USS Titan. Such is life.

But let us not say that the era of reboots has given us nothing, for Picard has returned to us. The plot of the new series has been kept under a wrap of deep space secrecy, for the most part, but here’s what we know from IMDB:

“Star Trek: Picard” is described as a follow-up series to Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), and centers on Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) in the next chapter of his life.
Right. On a quest to discover more information (as, we think, the Captain would want), we found the series’ first promotional poster displayed proudly upon Sir Patrick’s Twitter. The poster shows Picard standing before a vineyard (the Picard family vineyard to be exact), wearing the freshest overcoat of the 24th century and looking as brooding and introspective as ever.
Faithfully at his side, stands a big pitbull, and we could not be more delighted. It seems like retirement from outer space has been treating the Captain well.

The grandeur of Picard, bolstered by Stewart’s gravitas as a Shakespearean performer, has always suggested to audiences the image of an ideal leader. (A philosopher-king and a kindly devotee of earl grey, both!) The Captain’s benevolence and his clever, Solomonic mind have made him a fan-favorite across decades, but only now, indeed, is it on to the next generation. Will you dare to explore and seek out this voyage?
“Star Trek: Picard” will premiere on CBS All Access later this year and star Patrick Stewart, Santiago Cabrera, Isa Briones, and Michelle Hurd. The show, as you will see in this new SDCC trailer, also features, surprise(!), Brent Spiner and Jeri Ryan (“Star Trek: Voyager“), reprising their respective “Star Trek” franchise roles. “Star Trek: Next Generation” stars Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis were also announced as part of the show, but weren’t revealed in the trailers. Also, don’t forget to watch the “Star Trek: Short Takes” trailer as well.
“Star Trek: Picard,” starring Sir Patrick Stewart, arrives early 2020 exclusively on CBS All Access.
