'Star Wars: Clone Wars' Canceled, But Lucasfilm Promise New Show Set In "Time Period Previously Untouched"

nullIt has just been a few months since Disney bought the “Star Wars” franchise, and it’s only a matter of time before we receive a total onslaught of new “Star Wars” films and TV shows. The new trilogy is already coming, there’s a possibility of spinoff films, and there’s been talk of a live action TV series. Well if that’s still not enough new Star Wars for you, how about a brand new animated TV series?

On their website, Lucasfilm made an announcement regarding their current animated program “The Clone Wars” and future animated programming:  “As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming.”

What does a “new direction” mean for “The Clone Wars” series? “We feel the time has come to wind down the series,” the statement says. Lucasfilm will no longer be producing new episodes of the “The Clone Wars” for Cartoon Network, though they claim that new story arcs for the TV series are in the works. They also plan on postponing Seth Green’s (“Robot Chicken”) animated comedy series “Detours” for a later date.

While the statement is rather vague regarding the new direction Lucasfilm plans on taking, it does demonstrate how serious they are when it comes to future “Star Wars” programming. In the meantime, fans of “The Clone Wars” may be bummed hearing about the show’s ensuing demise, but soon there will be so much “Star Wars”-related material out there, you won’t even know what to do with yourself.
