The Disney era of “Star Wars” has left plenty of intriguing questions that will perhaps never get answered. What will become of all the footage Gareth Edwards shot that didn’t make the final cut of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“? What about the material that Phil Lord and Chris Miller put together before they bounced from “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and were replaced by Ron Howard? We might never know, and the same goes for Colin Trevorrow‘s vision for “Star Wars: Episode IX.”
The “Jurassic World” filmmaker was attached to helm the blockbuster conclusion of the new trilogy, before left the project last summer. Disney put the movie back in the confident hands of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams, who is co-writing a new script with Chris Terrio (“Justice League,” “Argo“). But what about the story Trevorrow would’ve told? Well, it was enough that just explaining it to Daisy Ridley moved her to tears.
“Saturday Night Live” alum Bobby Moynihan, recently guested on Collider’s “Jedi Council Podcast,” where he shared what little he could glean about ‘Episode IX.’
“I was in ‘The Book of Henry,’ the movie that Colin Trevorrow directed, and we talked about it a great deal. We’re both big fans, and I think one of the reasons he put me in the movie was because we hit it off talking about that,” he said. “I introduced him to Daisy Ridley at the ‘SNL‘ after-party, the first time they had met. I saw a moment where she said, ‘What happens to me?’ And he said, ‘Do you want to do this now?’ And she said, ‘Yeah,’ and they went off into a corner of the bar and he whispered it into her ear and she was crying.”
“I was like, I’m witnessing ‘Star Wars’ history right now, and I remember being so amazed and feeling so wonderful and happy for Colin because he’s such a fan,” he continued. “I haven’t spoken to him since the news came out that he’s not doing it, but it kills me because I would’ve loved to see what he would have done with it because he was so passionate about it.”
Again, I suppose we’ll never know. The interesting thing — among many — about ‘Episode IX’ is that where Rian Johnson had the luxury of writing ‘The Last Jedi’ in a bubble (he developed the story while ‘The Force Awakens’ was filming), Abrams will have to resist simply reacting to whatever fanboys like or dislike about the latest instalment.
