'Star Wars: The Last Jedi': Daisy Ridley Talks Rey's Family

The lingering question following “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has been: who are Rey’s parents? The most popular theory is that she’s directly related to Luke Skywalker, but most agree that her lineage is crucial to her story in the saga. Or is it?

Certainly, the knowledge would fill some gaps for the character, but according to Daisy Ridley, Rey’s destiny doesn’t lie in her family tree, but whatever happens in the future. Essentially, the character’s journey likely won’t be defined by the connections to her past.

“[Rey’s history] would potentially change her mind, or at least give her a little bit more peace in moving forward. But ultimately what’s coming is coming, and whatever abilities she has are there. So, personally, I think it’s less important than even she may think,” the actress told EW.

Even more, don’t expect Rey to change sides or allegiances based on who she might be related to.

“What’s wonderful is it’s not so cut and dry, who’s good and who’s bad and that’s not me saying, ‘Oh, my God, some people are gonna go bad,’” Ridley says. “There’s always room for bad people to make good decisions and vice versa. Again, that could be nothing to do with your parents and it could be everything to do with your parents.”

So, the speculation will continue about Rey’s Mom and Dad, but I’m gonna throw a wildcard out there and say its Benicio Del Toro‘s DJ.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens on December 15th.
