If it were up to J.J. Abrams, we probably wouldn’t have seen as much from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as we already have. Two trailers deep, with a strong handful of stills out there, and more, it pays to remember that Bob Iger had to effectively twist the director’s arm to release the first teaser last fall. However, with Disney preparing to bring the movie to San Diego Comic Con, fans lining up for the presentation may not like this bit of news.
EW reports that no new trailer, footage or clips are expected to be unveiled, with the focus instead on cast members, who didn’t appear at the Star Wars Celebration presentation, hitting the stage instead and joining Abrams, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. There will also be lots of "behind-the-scenes" stuff as well. In fact, according to the magazine, are going to have to wait until the fall for the next trailer. However, none of this should really be a huge surprise. Disney has their own big expo, D23, coming in August, and I’d wager that’s where they’ll show off the real goodies with ‘The Force Awakens.’
And there is something a bit admirable at least in Disney not burying everyone in an onslaught of marketing (though that will surely come with six months to go until the film opens). "Star Wars" sells itself in many ways, and so there’s not much need to spoil the product before opening day, and it’s only in the studio’s best interest to try and recreate that magic that audiences had during the original trilogy of lining up around the block with no idea what they are in for. Let’s hope some of that flavor remains.
But if you must have some "Star Wars" news today, a random Hong Kong tabloid is reporting that Donnie Yen is joining the spinoff "Star Wars: Rogue One." File that under: maybe.
See you on December 18th.
