Here's Your First Look At Johnny Flynn As David Bowie In Controversial Rock Biopic 'Stardust'

Rockstar biopics are a hot commodity in Hollywood right now. Thanks to “Bohemian Rhapsody” earning over $900 million worldwide last year and “Rocketman” continuing the trend of profitable movies based on musical icons, studios are clamoring for every rockstar story they can find. Now, it’s time for David Bowie to get the spotlight with the new film “Stardust.” And thanks to Total Film, we have our first look at the actor playing the rock icon.

“Stardust” is expected to tell the story of David Bowie’s rise to fame and the hardships he experienced along the way. And there to embody the musical genius is none other than Johnny Flynn, a musician himself and an actor who appeared in films like “Emma,” “Beast,” and “Clouds of Sils Maria.” He also appeared as Albert Einstein in the series “Genius.” So, he has experience portraying real-life icons.

So, you would think that if Flynn knocks it out of the park, then “Stardust” is likely going to be a home run for those involved, right? Well, there is one massive difference between this new biopic and “Rocketman” or “Bohemian Rhapsody.” You see, “Stardust” doesn’t have the support from Bowie’s family, with his son Duncan Jones actively posting about how he’s upset with the film’s existence. This means that there will be ZERO Bowie tracks used in the film. Yep, a rock biopic without the, uh, rock.

The producers have a plan though. They announced that “Stardust” will feature period-specific songs that Bowie covered during that time. Will this be enough to convince people to fork over their hard-earned money for a David Bowie biopic full of non-Bowie music? We shall see.
