Steven Spielberg could use a bit of a break. Cranking out three films over the last few years — mo-cap and animated “The Adventures Of Tintin,” WWI epic “War Horse” and presidential tale “Lincoln” (which walked away with two Oscars on Sunday), one might understand if he would rather be watching movies instead of making them. And with his “Robopocalypse,” originally planned to shoot this summer, now on hold as he gets the script right, it looks like Spielberg will be taking a little cinematic vacation to the south of France.
Steven Spielberg has been selected as the jury president for the 66th Cannes Film Festival. This confirms rumors that had been swirling over the past few weeks that a major American filmmaker would be getting the job, and indeed that’s the case. It will be a bit of a homecoming for Spielberg, whose “Sugarland Express” played in competition all the way back in 1974, where the picture won Best Screenplay. Of course, he’s a filmmaking icon around the world, and undoubtedly his presence is major boon for the fest. He’ll be joined by the previously announced Jane Campion, who will head up the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury.
The Cannes Film Festival will run from May 15th to 26th. [RTL]
