If you’re in the United States, this is Memorial Day Weekend, and that means this is the unofficial start to the Summer Movie Season. Somewhat shockingly, considering a lot of theaters are still closed and studios are still apprehensive about releasing big blockbusters, it appears that 2021 will actually have a summer filled with big franchises, surprising indies, and original films. And with that in mind, on this episode of The Playlist Podcast, we break down the summer films that are arriving over the next few months to see if there are any that people should get excited about and which ones they should probably avoid.

With Marvel Studios releasing two films this summer, “Black Widow” is arriving in July and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” hitting in September (early September counts as summer, don’t @ me), along with James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” we know there will be plenty of superhero shenanigans to be had. But with ‘Squad’ hitting HBO Max and theaters, and “Black Widow” going to Disney+ Premier Access at the same time as the big screen, should you just stay at home?

And which film is going to reign supreme over the box office when the dust settles at the end of the season? Marvel Studios is typically at the top or near to it, but with Vin Diesel sending Tyrese and Ludacris into space in “F9,” will that film end up taking home the summer movie box office crown? Lots of questions to be discussed! Honestly, it’s just exciting to talk about going to the movie theater and watching these films, no matter how good or bad they might be.
