Another year, another season of TV, only this year, there are nearly half a dozen new streaming services that are all mostly in full swing, all at the same time, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Peacock, and you could even consider AMC+. Summer 2022 is pretty jam-packed and while it’s full of blockbuster material too— more Marvel, more “Star Wars,” more “Game Of Thrones,” “The Boys” and even “Lord Of The Rings” at the end of the season—there’s still lots of what makes TV, TV, adult dramas and comedies too.

May brings Lucasfilm’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” but also a new Antonio Campos directed series (“The Staircase“), a new Lenny Abrahamson series (“Conversation With Friends“), and a new limited series by Clio Barnard (“The Essex Serpent“), plus “Stranger Things” returns for season four and Danny Boyle comes back to television for the Sex Pistols series, “Pistol.” June gives us “The Boys” season three, a new series by Olivier Assayas (“Irma Vep“), “Ms. Marvel” and “Peaky Blinders,” while July offers even more “Stranger Things” and Apple TV+’s “Black Bird.” While more shows will still be revealed, summer closes out with August’s “House Of Dragon” and “Lord Of The Rings” as we transition into the fall. Here’s how the summer shakes out as of right now, though do look for some updates in the upcoming weeks.
MAY:
“I Love That For You”
Written by and starring SNL alumnus Vanessa Bayer, “I Love That For You” is a comedy series co-created by Jeremy Beiler. Inspired by Bayer’s own story of childhood leukemia, the show follows a woman who has overcome childhood cancer and is finally pursuing her dream of becoming an on-air host of a home shopping channel. “I Love That For You” also stars Molly Shannon, Paul James, Ayden Mayeri, Matt Rogers, and Punam Patel.
Premiere Date: May 1 on Showtime.
“Ziwe” (Season 2)
Produced by A24, this self-titled sketch comedy show starring Ziwe Fumudoh premiered last May to rave reviews. The show has seen Fumudoh perform musical numbers, sketches, unscripted interactions with random people, and celebrity guests such as Phoebe Bridgers, Stacey Abrams, Gloria Steinem, and Andrew Yang. This season is set to be six episodes and in the hot seat are guests like Charlamagne Tha God, Amandla Stenberg, and more.
Premiere Date: May 1 on Showtime.
“The Staircase”
Based on Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s popular 2004 French television docu-series chronicling the trial of Michael Peterson, accused of murdering his wife under mysterious and dubious circumstances, “The Staircase” is HBO’s dramatized version. Co-created and directed by indie arthouse filmmaker Antonio Campos (“Simon Killer,” “Christine”), the series features an all-star cast including Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Rosemarie DeWitt, Juliette Binoche, Parker Posey, Sophie Turner, Odessa Young, Dane DeHaan, Michael Stuhlbarg and more (read our review).

“Girls5Eva” (Season 2)
The acclaimed musical comedy series from Meredith Scardino follows a girl group that achieved success in 2000, only to be a one-hit-wonder. Two decades later, they reunite and “get the band back together” after an up-and-coming rapper samples their song. “Girls5eva” stars Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips, Paula Pell, and Renee Elise Goldsbury.
Premiere Date: May 5 on Peacock.
“Candy”
True crime is still all the rage, so the limited series “Candy” centers on a too-crazy-to-be-true story from the 1980s when a Dallas, Texas suburbs housewife was killed with an axe. The rub? Her next-door neighbor was having an affair with her husband. What ensues is both thriller and legal drama. Showrun by Robin Veith (“Mad Men”) and Nick Antosca (“The Act”), “Candy” is directed by Michael Uppendahl (“American Horror Story”) and stars Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey, Timothy Simons, Pablo Schreiber, and Raúl Esparza (read our review).

“Breeders” (Season 3)
A comedic take on the challenges of parenting, “Breeders” stars Daisy Haggard and Martin Freeman as parents struggling with…well, everything. Season three picks up where season two left off: Freeman’s character moving out following marital problems and the aftermath of his teenage son (Alex Eastwood) punching him. Created by Chris Addison, Simon Blackwell and Freeman, the series is produced by Avalon TV, BBC, and Sky.
Premiere Date: May 9 on FX, released on Hulu the next day.
“Hacks” (Season 2)
Centering on the “dark” mentorship between a Las Vegas comedian (Jean Smart), her young, entitled Gen-Z writer (Hannah Einbinder), and their generational clashes, “Hacks” season two continues as the pair travels across the country workshopping a new stand-up act while dealing with the fallout of season one’s poison pill tactics. The all-star lineup this season includes Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen, Susie Essman, Margaret Cho, Devon Sawa, and more (read our review).
