Anthony Bregman, the indie producer who has been behind such projects as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Savages,” and Charlie Kaufman’s latest mindfuck “Synecdoche, New York,” has just teamed up with comedic writers Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer to make a family comedy drama, “Oranges.” Helfer has a history of working with “Wet Hot American Summer” director David Wain, and even appeared in ‘Summer,’ Reiss has done jack shit, but he has been recently hired by Todd Phillips to penn his new comedy, “Man Witch” so we can assume he is a pretty funny guy.
“Oranges” will deal with a middle aged man who beds his family friend’s daughter and must deal with the shit storm that ensues. From the one sentence synopsis it really feels like a rip off of “American Beauty,” and it has even described by someone close to the project as “‘American Beauty’ if ‘American Beauty’ had more comedy.” Let’s just hope the poetic garbage bag of life is way funnier.
