Looks like a reunion of talent from Jacques Audiard‘s excellent 2009 film “A Prophet” is in the works with Joachim Lafosse‘s next directorial effort, the family drama “Aimer à perdre la raison” — which roughly translates to “Loving Without Reason.”
With star Tahar Rahim and scribe Thomas Bidegain already on board, their ‘Prophet’ colleague Niels Arestrup (pictured above next to Rahim) has seemingly replaced Gerard Depardieu in the cast for the story of a doctor who raises his friend’s brother in Belgium and the drama that develops when the boy grows up and raises his own family. Co-scripted by Lafosse and Bidegain, the story is inspired by a riveting true story of a Belgian mother who killed her five children before attempting suicide. Actress Émilie Dequenne (“Rosetta“) co-stars, presumably playing said mother and wife to Rahim.
Despite his immense break-out success with Audiard’s crime epic, Rahim has stayed quietly on the European and independent movie scene, signing up to projects such as Kevin MacDonald‘s Roman-actioner “The Eagle” (where he played the silent villain), Lou Ye‘s romantic drama “Love & Bruises,” Jacques Annaud‘s oil-epic “Black Gold” and taking the lead role in Emir Kusturica‘s upcoming black comedy “Cool Water.” If anything, it’s veteran Arestrup who’s made the most of his exposure, scoring supporting roles in Joe Wright‘s “Hanna” and Steven Spielberg‘s “War Horse.”
