Steven Spielberg has been chasing his next directorial effort for a while now having attached himself and seemingly walked by the likes of the Abraham Lincoln biopic, a George Gershwin biopic, a remake of “Harvey,” “Matt Helm” with Jon Hamm, adaptations of kid’s literature “War Horse” and “39 Clues,” , the list goes on….
Vulture are now reporting that an intense talent agency battle for the “The Dark Knight” co-scribe Jonathan Nolan that concluded with the writer signing for WME may be evidence that his long gestating team up with Spielberg for sci-fi time travel flick “Interstellar” may be in the cards.
The sci-fi project is based on a treatment by physicist Kip Thorne and reportedly explores ideas of wormholes, other dimensions and time travel. The project caught the eye of Spielberg who brought it on board and then hired Nolan to develop a script — but that was nearly three years ago, with little movement on its development since.
Could the agencies be banking on Nolan being the screenwriter for Spielberg’s next blockbuster? That’s what Vulture are hypothesizing at least but we think it’s a bit presumptuous. Nolan is already at work on the third ‘Batman’ flick and, while we’re not sure if the new agency would qualify for royalties on that, surely that project alone is enough to warrant interest. Or that he may assist David Goyer and his brother on the new ‘Superman’ project?
Still, it’s anyone’s guess what Spielberg is planning. The bearded one has reportedly been “close” to helming at least half of the aforementioned projects only to be linked to something new weeks later. “Robopocalypse” was the latest contender but would he really want to tread the same ground as “War Of The Worlds”? “Interstellar” at least sounds unique — especially with Nolan’s involvement — and potentially reminiscent of an old-school, inspiring Spielberg sci-fi pic.
In the meantime, Spielberg can just sit back and make a fortune producing the likes of Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers’ franchise and HBO’s “The Pacific” without lifting a finger, though he is currently trying to get a script about Jackie Kennedy going with HBO said to be front-runners to pick it up.
