Back in August, it was announced, somewhat unceremoniously, that filmmaker Neill Blomkamp had stepped away from the film “RoboCop Returns.” And in that announcement made by the filmmaker on Twitter, he hinted at a new project that he was excited to begin work on. Well, thanks to a new report, we know what that the project is titled “Inferno” and already has a star attached.
Deadline is reporting that Blomkamp’s next film is the horror-thriller titled “Inferno,” produced by AGC Studios, and the filmmaker has signed actor Taylor Kitsch to star. “Inferno” is said to follow a cop (Kitsch), who is brought on to investigate what seems to be a typical murder. However, the crime is found to have something bigger, maybe even extraterrestrial, in play, leading the FBI to investigate. The cop then has to fight a humanoid beast that will stop at nothing to kill the one witness to the crime.

“I am very excited to be getting behind the camera and making ‘Inferno’ with AGC,” said Blomkamp. “The film is filled with themes and concepts that I find deeply fascinating, I feel lucky to be shooting it.”
Stuart Ford, AGC CEO, added, “Over the last decade Neill Blomkamp has proven himself to be one of the most innovative creators of science fiction cinema in the world and I’m convinced that ‘Inferno’ is going to break new ground and take Neill’s body of work to even greater heights.”
Kitsch is an actor that was poised to be the next big thing almost a decade ago, after he was coming off a star-making role on the NBC series “Friday Night Lights” and was set to star in the highly-anticipated “John Carter.” However, after the latter film bombed in epic fashion followed in quick succession by another flop, “Battleship,” the actor has been trying to recover ever since. He’s appeared in series such as “True Detective” and last year’s “Waco,” as well as recent films like “American Assassin” and “Only the Brave.” Kitsch will next be seen in the upcoming Russo Brothers-produced action film “21 Bridges.”
No word on when “Inferno” might arrive in theaters, but production is expected to begin in early 2020.
