Though she’s conquered the music world and the gossip pages, Taylor Swift is now trying her hand at acting. She had a voice role in last year’s animated “The Lorax” and popped up in one episode of “New Girl,” but now it looks like Hollywood is ready to let her act opposite legends like Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. Okay, then …

THR reports that Swift is joining “The Giver,” the adaptation of Lois Lowry‘s popular Newberry Medal-winning young adult sci-fi novel that has Phillip Noyce slated to direct. The film is set in a futuristic, dystopian world (of course) where society has eradicated memories and emotion, giving the responsibility of remembering the past to a single person, the Receiver. The hero, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), is selected to be the new Receiver, but while being trained by the titular Giver (Bridges), a previous Receiver, he finds himself struggling with the duties he bears.

There’s no word yet on Swift’s role, but she’ll be joined by Katie Holmes, who will play the mother of Thwaites’ character. Alexander SkarsgårdOdeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan round out the cast.

The long-developing project, which Bridges has been shepherding for years, will start filming in October. And let’s hope they do it justice, at least for the legions who grew up loving the source material.
