Following up from the first glimpse at lead Kate Winslet, a teaser trailer has now been uncovered for Todd Haynes’ highly anticipated five-part HBO miniseries remake of “Mildred Pierce.”
The project sees Winslet step into the shoes of Joan Crawford whose performance in Michael Curtiz’s 1948 noir classic earned her the Best Actress Oscar that year. Winslet is strongly tipped to give a similar tour-de-force performance as the troubled single mom in 1930s Southern California who strives to maintain her family’s middle-class lifestyle in the midst of the Great Depression.
Backed by what is apparently a reworked version of the opening sequence theme in Joe Wright’s “Atonement,” the trailer surprisingly shows an equal amount of Evan Rachel Wood, who plays the titular character’s daughter, Veda, played in the 1948 version as a snobbish socialite and a victim of her mother’s smothering. It definitely looks like Wood’s biggest chance to shine since Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” in 2008 — though to be fair, she hasn’t been in many films since. Guy Pearce also features prominently as one of Pierce’s husbands with Melissa Leo also chiming in with a few lines.
“Mildred Pierce” will premiere on HBO in the spring of 2011 for what will likely be the outright front-runner for next year’s Outstanding Miniseries Emmy. [via AwardsDaily] Video below.
