The Television Critics Association announced the 2021 winners of the 37th Annual TCA Awards and, as expected, “Ted Lasso” ruled the proceedings. The Apple TV+ series not only took the prestigious Program of the Year honor but Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding New Program. It’s perhaps a good omen for “Lasso” which is up for a slew of awards at the Primetime Emmys this Sunday.

It was a banner result for HBO and HBO Max which saw Michaela Coel take the Individual Achievement in Drama for “I May Destroy You,” Jean Smart win the Individual Achievement in Comedy for “Hacks,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver win the Variety, Talk or Sketch category, and “Mare of Easttown” win the incredibly competitive Movies, Miniseries or Specials honor.
Netflix also earned major wins as “The Crown” take Outstanding Achievement in Drama, “The Babysitters Club” win the Youth Programming category, and “Deaf U” tie for Achievement in Reality. Showtime’s “Couple’s Therapy” was the other winner in the Reality field. FX and Hulu’s “Framing Britney Spears,” a doc the singer is not happy with, but may have assisted her in her campaign to break free of her conservatorship, won Oustanding Achievement in News and Information.
The TCA membership also bestowed Jean Smart with the Career Achievement Award. Her legendary career includes roles on “Designing Women,” “24,” “Fargo,” “Legion,” “Watchmen” and the aforementioned “Mare of Easttown” and “Hacks.” In exciting news, “The Golden Girls” finally got its due from the TCA as it joined classic programs such as “The Sopranos,” “The Simpsons,” “Cheers,” and “All in the Family,” among others, as a recipient of the TCA Heritage Award.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TCA will forego its formal in-person presentation for the second straight year.
