Terrence Malick To Produce A Documentary About Late-Rapper Lil Peep

Terrence Malick is a filmmaker known for taking risks and making bold statements with his projects. Never has Malick been the director that follows the typical Hollywood studio system trajectory. After creating incredible films like “Badlands,” “The Thin Red Line,” and “The Tree of Life,” Malick would go on to challenge moviegoers with “Knight of Cups” and his “Voyage of Time” documentary.

Since then, he’s made unique choices with works like “Song to Song” and the upcoming “Radegund,” and even directed a commercial for the Pixel 3 smartphone. However, none of that is as surprising as the statement we’re about to make.

Terrence Malick is set to executive produce a documentary about the late-rapper Lil Peep.

That’s right, the young rapper that died last year due to an accidental overdose is the subject of an upcoming documentary that Malick is set to put his name on. Why would Malick work on a documentary about a rapper that most people over 25 haven’t heard of? Well, according to the New York Times, the filmmaker is a close friend of Peep’s family. The exact details aren’t really known at this time.

The documentary will chart the life and times of Gustav Ahr, aka Lil Peep, who rose to fame based on his unique blend of hip-hop and emo music. While he didn’t live long enough to see how high he could climb (he passed away at 21 after the aforementioned overdose), Lil Peep still had a devoted fanbase that will carry on as more unreleased music and the doc are released.

No release date is set for the Lil Peep documentary, but it’s a safe assumption it’ll be released fairly soon, as the rapper has only become more famous posthumously. As for Malick fans, this is an unlikely project from an always-surprising filmmaker and might be worth checking out.
