That ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ Sequel You've Been Waiting For Is In The Works

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

We thought this already happened, but then realized we were thinking about the very short-lived and swiftly canceled TV series, “My Big Fat Greek Life.” But now, more than ten years later, the sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is in the works, so tell your Mom.

If you somehow weren’t on the planet Earth in 2002, you might have forgotten how much of a sensation the Nia Vardalos written and starring movie was at the time. Made for a paltry $5 million, the movie wound up being the fifth highest grossing picture of the year, earning $241 million at the U.S. box office, and over $360 million total worldwide. Yes, really. Or to put it another way, it made more money domestically than “Men In Back II,” “Die Another Day,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Ice Age” and “Austin Powers In Goldmember.” It was massive.

That said, the staying power of the movie hasn’t quite sustained one could argue. Vardalos is probably still best known for her role in that film, though her career was certainly launched in a big way by the film. But will anyone really be wanting a followup, one that will follow the Portokalos who get involved in an even bigger wedding than before? Guess we’ll see.

Vardalos will write and direct and don’t worry, John Corbett will be back as well. No word yet on when this might lens. [Variety]
