The Bad Company Anti-Heroes Of 'Suicide Squad' Assemble In New Photos

As summer blockbusters IP, studios continually begin to pivot to what works. 20th Century Fox is likely going to shift towards the “Deadpool” universe as this side character has become the highest grossing “X-Men” movie of all time. Likewise with “Batman V. Superman” deeply underperforming its studio expectations ($1 billion plus), Warner Bros. is now already thinking about turning its villains franchise, “Suicide Squad” into its focus franchise. The studio is already working on “Suicide Squad 2” and also developing a Harley Quinn stand-alone film for Margot Robbie. That’s pretty ballsy considering “Suicide Squad” is still two months away from release. On the flipside, fans have reacted extremely well to its trailers and the movie is arguably the most anticipated blockbuster of the summer.

How did David Ayer convince all these names, including Will Smith to star in his movie? He’s hardcore and extremely convincing in his psychological approach. Brad Pitt and the cast of “Fury” all admitted they became deeply submerged in their characters and maybe went too far (Shia LaBeouf gave himself his own scar by cutting his face). And it sounds like the “Suicide Squad” cast are equally embracing their characters.

“He’s sexist, he’s racist, he’s a total piece of shit and that’s something I’ve embraced fully,” Jai Courtney told Total Film recently. “It’s Boomer’s job to state the obvious, do the wrong thing and annoy everybody with his ignorance.” Ayer is definitely encouraging all the actors to see their characters as pretty far on the edges of sanity.

“Harley’s relationship [with the Joker] is nuts,” Margot Robbie sad. “It’s terrifying. She’s co-dependent with the Joker, and when you see that, you start seeing it as a mental illness.” The magazine recently released new images from the film and they show these anti-hero characters in action. Here’s the official synopsis:

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

It’s been said a movie about Super villains could never work, but with anti-heroes like “Deadpool” taking off, perhaps audiences are ripe for left-of-center bad guys and reluctant saviors. Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Viola Davis, and Ben Affleck as Batman “Suicide Squad” will hit theaters nationwide August 5th, 2016.
