Amazon Orders A Full Season Of 'The Boys' College Spinoff But With New Showrunners

When a network/streaming service finds an unexpected hit series, you better believe it’s going to explore expanding the franchise with sequels and spinoffs. And for Amazon and “The Boys,” not only is the series still going strong, with Season 3 expected soon, but the streaming platform is officially greenlighting the first spinoff.

According to THR, Amazon has given a season order for the untitled spinoff of “The Boys.” The series was previously reported as getting a pilot order, but apparently, Amazon was enthused with what it saw in that episode and has given the series a full season to spread its superhero cape. One small issue though—the series’ original showrunner, Craig Rosenberg, has been replaced by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, due to creative differences. Alas, all’s well that ends well, and “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke is excited that his series is joining the hallowed halls of TV history as yet another popular show to spawn at least one spinoff.

“Much like ‘Mork & Mindy’ spun-off from ‘Happy Days’ — which is an insane and true fact — our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own,” said Kripke. “It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes. Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, ‘Baywatch Nights’ spun off from ‘Baywatch,’ and it had vampires. Vampires!”

As Kripke teased, the untitled spinoff is set in the world of “The Boys,” which is a superhero universe where the most popular heroes are all controlled by a mega-corporation called Vought. And in the spinoff, the show will focus on the only Vought-funded college for young-adult superheroes that are hoping to hit it big and become the next big superhero celebrities. Also, since it’s a college-set story, expect all sorts of raunch, which is to be expected from anything tied to “The Boys.”

The ensemble cast includes Jaz Sinclair (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Lizze Broadway (“Here and Now”), Shane Paul McGhie (“Unbelievable”), Aimee Carrero (“Elena of Avalor”), Reina Hardesty (“Brockmire”), and Maddie Phillips (“Teenage Bounty Hunters”). Obviously, more casting news is expected to be made now since the series has been picked up for a full season. The new showrunners, Fazekas and Butters, are no strangers to superhero universes. Both previously worked as showrunners for ABC’sAgent Carter,” which was a spinoff of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Obviously, with a green light, the ‘Boys’ spinoff can begin work on the first season, which is likely going to hit sometime in 2022. “The Boys” Season 3 is likely/hopefully going to arrive before the end of 2021.
