There’s no denying that Amazon’s upcoming superhero series “The Boys” is mean-spirited. You can’t watch five seconds of any of the marketing materials, including the most recent, profanity-filled, blood-soaked trailer, without knowing that this new series isn’t interested in playing nice.
And in the new trailer, you get the general premise of “The Boys.” The series follows The Butcher and his group of vigilantes, as they hunt down and murder superheroes. But don’t think that The Boys are the villains. Oh, no. They are the good guys and it’s The Seven (this universe’s Justice League or Avengers) who are the terrible people. In this reality, the superheroes are entitled assholes that don’t care about collateral damage and are more concerned with their celebrity status.
And that’s where you get to the crux of “The Boys.” After you realize that you should be rooting for the “heroes” that bludgeon, decapitate, torture, and use laser-eyed babies as tools to perform horrific killings, you either are on board for the insanity or think that Amazon is on some sort of drugs for thinking this series is a good idea, to begin with.
“The Boys” stars Karl Urban, Jennifer Esposito, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, and Elisabeth Shue. The series is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and is showrun by Eric Kripke, of “Supernatural” fame.
The series arrives on Amazon Prime Video on July 26.
Here’s the synopsis:
The series is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.
