As you hopefully already know, Hulu’s “The Dropout,” is terrific, and Amanda Seyfried is incredible in her layered depiction— something between absolute confidence, desperation, and legitimate imposter syndrome—of Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos, the embattled tech/healthcare startup that lied to its investors, employees, and partners creating a major fraud sh*tstorm in 2018 when their grift became exposed (read our review here).
Seyfried is getting her just flowers for her amazing turn as the manipulative, conniving Theranos CEO, but we shouldn’t also forget the show’s co-lead, Naveen Andrews, aka Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani. In the Theranos story, Bulwani was Holmes’ secret lover, millionaire boyfriend who advised Holmes from the shadows and then eventually became the company’s president and COO and Holmes’ protective bulldog, helping her lie, evade, and manipulate everyone around her.
In this exclusive clip that we are pleased to present, from Episode 5, which debuts tomorrow, Andrews’ Balwani character is in full frothing attack mode, complaining why the Edison— Theranos’ second machine attempting to glean health data from a drop of blood— isn’t working. Suffice to say, Balwani explodes and loses his shit because deadlines are looming and Theranos—who always put the cart before the horse arrogantly assuming, they’d “figure it out”—are in danger of being exposed.
“The Dropout” is must-watch TV, so tune in tomorrow to watch Episode 3 on Hulu, and or, get cracking on catching up on one of the most compelling shows of the year asap.
