When the pandemic really hit the US hard in March 2020, people had no idea COVID would be a daily issue more than a year-and-a-half later. But here we are, still dealing with the very deadly illness long after the events documented in the new film “The First Wave” happened.
As seen in the trailer for “The First Wave,” the new documentary from award-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman tells the story of the first weeks of the COVID outbreak in the United States. It shows just how brutal the illness is that took the lives of hundreds of thousands and disrupted our entire country. It was such a strange time that Heineman found it necessary to help document the events.

“I felt a deep responsibility to document this unprecedented moment in time, to put people in the shoes of those who lived it on the front lines,” said Heineman. “There are many things that I hope audiences take away from this film, but for me, it’s a story about how people come together in times of crisis, it’s about resilience, it’s about the power of hope and the strength of the human spirit.”
National Geographic Documentary Films, NEON and Participant will release “The First Wave” in theaters on November 19. You can watch the trailer below.
