After the massive, somewhat surprising success of “Downton Abbey,” it was clear series creator Julian Fellowes wouldn’t have trouble finding a studio to bring his next big period series to life. And that series, “The Gilded Age,” has found perhaps the best studio/network for this sort of prestige drama, HBO.

As seen in the trailer for “The Gilded Age,” creator-writer-producer Julian Fellowes invites viewers to New York City in 1882, at the beginning of a massive change in the history of the United States economy. New money meets old money, and with it, drama ensues. Oh, and everybody looks fantastic. This is a big-budget Julian Fellowes/HBO series, obviously.
As you might expect from a series from Julian Fellowes, “The Gilded Age” features an incredible ensemble cast. For his new HBO series, Fellowes has enlisted actors such as Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Denée Benton, Louisa Jacobson, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel, Jack Gilpin, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski.
Sonja Warfield has joined Fellowes to co-write the series with the nine-episode drama directed by Michael Engler and Salli Richardson-Whitfield.
“The Gilded Age” debuts on HBO on January 24, 2022. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook (Jacobson) moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon). Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?
