Hold on Oscar prognosticators, “The Social Network” isn’t a lock for Oscar just yet.
Last night, the Producers Guild Awards were handed out and this time it was “The King’s Speech” that came out on top, snatching up a Best Picture win and ensuring that the Oscar race is going to be a very close one. While “The Social Network” has seemed unstoppable recently, and a clear favorite among pundits, Tom Hooper‘s film is far from down and out. Some have speculated that while David Fincher‘s film is an accomplished work, its characters are cold and not particularly likeable whereas Tom Hooper’s film plays like a perfectly calibrated old-school Oscar fave: an uplifting period piece that’s impeccably shot and acted. Meanwhile, in the animation and documentary categories the winners came out as expected: “Toy Story 3” and “Waiting For Superman” won their respective trophies.
The Oscar nominees will be announced on Tuesday morning and if you want an idea of who will earn recognition, the Producers Guild nominees are about as good as a forecast it gets. Check out the nominees and winners below. [GoldDerby]
