One day, I was talking with a group of coworkers about films. One of them stated that they felt that the superhero movie genre was dying and that after “Avengers: Endgame,” they didn’t see much hope for the genre. We talked about how film genres come in waves and questioned what genre will have it’s surge next. The answer? The Rom-Com. Thanks to Netflix.
If you had one last summer with your mates what would you do? Would you break-up with your significant other? Would you finally tell the girl you’ve been crushing on that you’ve been crushing on her? These are some of the dilemmas that face the teens in “The Last Summer.”
Featuring several intersecting stories, “The Last Summer” follows a group of recent high school graduates as they navigate new relationships and finding their way during their final summer before taking off for college. The film stars K. J. Apa, Maia Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Halston Sage, and Tyler Posey. There are also appearances by Sosie Bacon, Wolfgang Novogratz, Gabrielle Anwar, Ed Quinn, Jacob McCarthy, Mario Revolori, Gage Golightly, and Norman Johnson Jr.
Last year, Netflix rebooted the rom-c0m genre with its wildly successful Summer of Love. This included hit films like “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” “The Kissing Booth,” and “Sierra Burgess is a Loser.” It appears that they are hoping to keep that momentum going with “The Last Summer” and “The Perfect Date” starring Netflix’s favorite leading man, Noah Centineo.
The film was directed by William Bindley, who co-wrote the film with Scott Bindley.
“The Last Summer” will be released on Netflix on May 3.
