'The Mentalist' Star Amanda Righetti Joins 'The Avengers'

We can’t say we’ve really watched the CBS psychic police procedural “The Mentalist” but as it heads into its fourth season this fall, it’s clear there is an audience for the show and it looks like the cast are beginning to capitalize on that popularity. Lead actor Simon Baker has logged time already in films like “The Killer Inside Me,” “Women In Trouble” and upcoming financial crisis drama “Margin Call” and now co-star Amanda Righetti will add a tentpole to her CV.

According to The Daily Blam, the actress has joined Joss Whedon‘s “The Avengers.” Details on her role — which is likely to be small considering the film is now in the middle of production — haven’t been revealed, but it’s rumored she’ll either be Carol Danvers (aka Ms. Marvel) or S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter (the niece of Peggy Carter played by Hayley Atwell in “Captain America: The First Avenger“). Chatter seems to be leaning more toward her playing the latter part than the former, but as with most things surrounding the comic movie right now, exact details are being kept close to the chest.

While “The Avengers” won’t be taking over Comic-Con, fans needn’t worry as D23 in August is just around the corner and the film will likely make a big splash there. And as anyone who has been on the internet over the past forty-eight hours knows, there will be a big treat for those who stick around after the credits of ‘Captain America’ when it opens on Friday. “The Avengers” hits cinemas May 4, 2012.
