If you’re a reader of this website, you probably are of the same mind as us that anything Cate Blanchett chooses to appear in is something we want to watch. Film, TV show, or if she decides to moonlight as a stand-up comedian, we’re down to give her the benefit of the doubt. So, obviously, we’re all-in on her new film, “The New Boy.”
According to Dirty Films (Blanchett’s production company) and Scarlett Pictures, the two studios are set to produce the upcoming film, “The New Boy,” written and directed by Warwick Thornton. Production is expected to begin this fall in Australia.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
Set in 1940s Australia, THE NEW BOY depicts the mesmeric story of a 9-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun (played by Blanchett). The New Boy’s presence disturbs the delicately balanced world in this story of spiritual struggle and the cost of survival.
“What a joy to finally be collaborating with Warwick—a filmmaker whose warmth, wit, and humanity we have admired for so very long,” said Blanchett. “We can’t wait to be on the ground with him and the wonderful Kath Shelper to realize this startling story.”
Thornton added, “The idea for the story of this little boy has been flickering in my imagination for a long time. Kath and I are beyond excited to be working with Cate and the Dirty Films mob to put him up on the big screen where he belongs.”
Joining Blanchett in the cast of the film are Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair. Thornton is probably best known for his work on the film “Samson and Delilah,” as well as projects such as “Sweet Country” and the TV series, “Mystery Road.”
“The New Boy” is looking for a distributor now and doesn’t have a release date yet.
