Writer/director Robert Eggers returns with his third feature film, “The Northman,” after giving us arresting genre thrillers like “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.” His new movie takes us 1,000 years into the past with a young Viking prince who witnesses his father’s murder and his kingdom stolen, only to return years later to intact a path of violence and revenge which is based on the original Scandinavian tale that directly influenced “Hamlet.”
Focus Features has released a short red band trailer (See below) ahead of “The Northman” swinging into theaters this week, focusing on heroic character Amleth’s brutal journey towards his goal of revenge within this visually stunning setting.
The Playlist’s own glowing review called the new Viking epic “a staggering feat of visceral filmmaking [that] warrants profound analysis while still delivering a high-octane action odyssey.” Adding that “Eggers has ambitiously crafted lands as an invigorating beacon for an industry in need of studio fare with substantial ideas and artistry.”
Its cast consists of a group of fantastic actors such as Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
Eggers has been trying to put together a remake of the 1922 silent vampire film “Nosferatu,” prepping the horror film in Prague, but it remains to be seen if he’ll ultimately make that next after Harry Styles (“Dunkirk“) passed on a key role over scheduling issues and Anya Taylor-Joy is being whisked away to Australia for George Miller‘s “Furiosa” soon.
“The Northman” debuts in theaters on Friday and you can watch the violent new trailer below.
