'The Silent Sea' Trailer: Netflix Ventures Out Into Space With Its Latest South Korean Series

Space has long been the go-to location for sci-fi projects and it’s easy to see why. A void that is cold, dark, and deadly, outer space thrives as much on the unknown as it does known variables. Netflix’s “The Silent Sea” is tackling the expanse once again. The Korean series features a group of explorers who find more than they bargained for while stranded on the moon.

The series comes from director Choi Hang-Yong. His short film “Sea of Tranquility” deals with many of the same concepts found in “The Silent Sea.” In ‘Tranquility’ the protagonist visits the moon to dispel a haunting dream only to find it come true. While Choi Hang-Yong handled both writing and directing duties on the short, he’s joined by writer Eun-kyo Park for the upcoming Netflix series. Jung Woo-sung acts as producer on the project.

Gong Yoo stars in the series, and the actor is no stranger to genre fare, putting in a memorable performance in the modern horror classic “Train to Busan.” He also had a small but pivotal role in 2021’s breakout drama “Squid Game.” The Netflix hit is represented by another familiar face, Heo Sung-tae. Previously seen as the villainous Jang Deok-su, his role became one of the series most talked about characters. Outside of ‘Game’ actors, ‘Sea’ includes Bae Doona; her previous roles extend to popular series “Stranger” and “Kingdom.”

The series’ official synopsis:

“During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets.”

A journey to the moon becomes a fight for survival in “The Silent Sea.” The entire first season arrives on December 24 on Netflix. Get your first look at the trailer below:
