'The Staggering Girl' First Look Clip: Luca Guadagnino Teams With Julianne Moore For This New Short Debuting At Cannes [Exclusive]

A new film by director Luca Guadagnino is always cause for celebration. After his breakout, award-winning film “Call Me By Your Name,” audiences all over the world eagerly anticipate everything that the director releases. Last year, the director subverted expectations with one of the most disturbing horror films of the year, with “Suspiria.” And this year, he returns with a short film that is unlike other films playing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “The Staggering Girl.”

In honor of Guadagnino’s latest having its world premiere at the prestigious film event this week, we are thrilled to give our readers an exclusive look at the short film, which stars Julianne Moore. As seen in the clip, the director’s style is readily apparent, as is the wonderful acting from the veteran cast. However, what sets “The Staggering Girl” apart is the film’s genesis, as a collaboration between Guadagnino and creative director of the Maison Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli.

The short film is inspired by some of the latest fashion designs by Valentino and its creative director Piccioli. Guadagnino describes how the style of the Valentino collection inspired his short, saying, “The artistic and emotional depth, the transfiguring capacity of Pierpaolo Piccioli’s work were the ‘text,’ like a great novel, on which base the script of this dreamed film.”

The film stars Moore, Kyle MacLachlan, Marthe Keller, Kiki Layne, Mia Goth, and Alba Rohrwacher. “The Staggering Girl” is written by Michael Mitnick, the writer behind the film “The Current War” and the short-lived HBO series “Vinyl.”

“The Staggering Girl” will make its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, as part of the Directors’ Fortnight.

Moving between Rome and New York, the film tells an intimate story, made of symbols, gestures, images, the strength of the blood relationship and gender between two women who have come to terms with themselves.
