As “The Tree of Life” continues to roll out across North America and the rest of the world, Terrence Malick fans in the U.K. have been frustrated by the lack of any news regarding a release. Earlier in the year, a bit of a brouhaha erupted when original distributors Icon tried to schedule a release prior to the film’s planned Cannes Film Festival premiere, before it was revealed that they actually didn’t have the rights to the film due to a breach in their contract with Summit International. But thankfully all of that has been sorted and the film is headed to merry ol’ England.
Time Out London were actually the first to see the film crop up on a schedule, tweeting out a link this morning to a Curzon Cinemas location that already had the film on their schedule with advance tickets for sale. But confirmation proper has arrived via Deadline who reveal Fox Searchlight will now handle the film in the U.K. and a July 8th release has been penciled in.
Of course, we shouldn’t have to tell you about the film by now, but if you’re just tuning in, it stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain and it’s the story of a fractured relationship between a father and his children told through the prism of our place in the universe. It’s heady, provoking stuff that doesn’t always work, but is consistently fascinating, at times deeply moving, and pretty much unlike anything you’ll see on the big screen this year. So mark your calendars, British Malick fans. The movie will be far more worth your time then that wedding thing that just happened over there.
