There’s going to be some cinephiles that don’t want to hear it, but “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is very much in the Oscar race. While the backlash is continuing to build around the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award winner (which has generally a very good augur of awards season success), the Screen Actors Guild wasn’t having it.
Martin McDonagh‘s provocative drama/black comedy led the night winning for Best Ensemble, Best Leading Female for Frances McDormand, and Best Supporting Male for Sam Rockwell. Of course, last night’s PGA Awards victor was “The Shape Of Water,” but when it comes to the acting categories at the Oscars this year, ‘Billboards’ could be a spoiler.
Elsewhere, there were no huge surprises, though Allison Janney wining for Best Supporting Female for “I, Tonya” was a bit unexpected. Laurie Metcalf for “Lady Bird” seemed more like a dead certainty, though Janney’s role was more colorful.
