When Nacho Vigalondo‘s upcoming “Colossal” was first reported in the trades, it was described as “Godzilla” meets “Lost In Translation.” That pretty much had us sold already, particularly when it comes from “Timecrimes” and “Extraterrestrial” director Vigalondo. Now it’s headed to TIFF where it could make a big noise, particularly with the kind of cast he’s lined up.

Starring Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson, the film follows a going-nowhere party girl who discovers a mysterious connection between herself and a giant monster wreaking havoc on the other side of the globe. Again, that’s one helluva premise. Here’s the official synopsis:
Gloria is an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and being kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
“Colossal” will screen in the Vanguard section of TIFF which runs from September 8th to 18th.
