Tiffany Haddish & Awkwafina In Talks To Reboot '21 Jump Street' Franchise

Gone are the days that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were going to combine the “Men in Black” and “21 Jump Street” franchises for one mega film. Now, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson rebooting the ‘MiB’ franchise, it’s time for Sony to take a look at the ‘Jump Street’ franchise for a new direction. And according to a new report, it appears the new direction includes Tiffany Haddish and the breakout comedy star from “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Collider is reporting that Tiffany Haddish is in talks to star in the ‘Jump Street’ reboot that is being described as a “female-driven” film. And joining Haddish in the film, according to sources, is Awkwafina, a comedian/rapper/actor best known for her role in “Crazy Rich Asians.”

While we don’t have an official synopsis for the film just yet, it sounds like this version of ‘Jump Street’ is going to put a bit of a spin on the traditional undercover cop formula. Instead of trying to make Haddish, who is in her late-30s, an undercover cop posing as a high-school student, this new film will feature the popular comedic actress as an undercover cop posing as the mother of another student (who is also a police officer, presumably the Awkwafina role). So you see, it’s different…but similar.

If you’re not familiar with Haddish, then apparently you’ve been avoiding the theater for the past two years, as the actress has seemingly been in almost every film over that period. Most recently, Haddish starred in “Night School” opposite Kevin Hart and “Nobody’s Fool.” But over the past year, she’s also starred in “Uncle Drew” and “The Oath.” So yeah, she’s all over the place.

Awkwafina, on the other hand, is primarily known as her character from “Crazy Rich Asians.” But before then, she was also featured in “Ocean’s 8,” earlier this year. She’s definitely a star on the rise.

No word on a release date as of yet.
