In December, when fans sit down in theaters to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” they’re either going to be incredibly excited at the revelation that all three film Spider-Men (Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, respectively) are sharing the screen together, which confirms one of the worst-kept secrets in MCU history, or they’re going to be part of one of the biggest disappointments in film history. Surely, after all the rumors, “leaks,” and reports, ‘No Way Home’ is definitely going to have all three film Spider-Men together, right? Well, Tom Holland wants to warn fans that it’s not happening…or is it? Because it sure does seem like the actor almost let the cat out of the bag, so to speak.
In a new interview with TotalFilm, Tom Holland teased how “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is going to see “three generations coming together.” But he’s only talking about how there are villains from other versions of ‘Spider-Man’ films returning. Not the actual Spider-Men, themselves. He promises.
“Everyone puts their trousers on in the same way in the morning,” Holland explained. “It was interesting having those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way, and…I’m talking about Alfred [Molina] and Jamie [Foxx] and those guys. To see Alfred come in, and have to adapt and change to the way that the films are made, but also change director, and also [the fact that] I’m now Spider-Man. It was really interesting to see these actors adapt and change what they were doing to fit the modern era.”
He continued, “People don’t believe me when I say that [Maguire and Garfield] are not coming back. But people are going to have to believe me at some point. [Laughs] It means a lot to me. The first time you see Doc and the rest of the characters that come back, it’s so exciting – and it’s such a huge moment in cinematic history. It’s three generations coming together.”
Read the first couple of lines carefully and see if you can find where the almost slip-up happens.
Did you see it? I mean, come on! This is happening, right? We’re going to definitely see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield join Holland in the film, right? This is getting ludicrous.
Obviously, Kevin Feige, Tom Holland, and everyone else involved in this film are trying to say that the other Spideys aren’t showing up. That’s what they’d say regardless of the truth, just to preserve some semblance of a surprise. Either that, or they’re telling the truth and fans are going to be hugely let down when they walk out of the theater this December. If that’s the case, let’s just cancel Christmas now, ok? The holiday will be ruined and Kevin Feige will have murdered Santa.
Ok, that’s a bit harsh and hyperbolic. But honestly, at some point, Marvel Studios is going to have to flat-out tell fans what to expect. Because short of a confirmation or full-blown denial (with proof), expectations are so high for “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it’s almost a lose-lose situation for everyone involved.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” hits theaters on December 17.
