Abel Ferrara is a filmmaker that can be called many things. He’s an award winner. Some call him controversial. But one thing you can’t call him is lazy. The filmmaker has been steadily making films (or acting in them) since the early ‘70s. Now, as an established voice in the industry, and regarded as one of the best in the world, Ferrara comes back to the Cannes Film Festival with his latest work, “Tommaso.”

In honor of Ferrara’s film debuting as a special screening at this year’s Cannes, we are thrilled to give our readers an exclusive look at a clip from the film, as well as some new pictures. “Tommaso” follows the story of an American artist in Rome, along with his younger European wife and their daughter. We have yet to see the film, but when you consider that the filmmaker himself is an American artist that moved to Rome and is married with a young daughter, you can’t help but wonder just how much of “Tommaso” is autobiographical.
“Tommaso” reunites Ferrara with one of his recent actors, Willem Dafoe. Dafoe is no stranger to linking up with famous auteurs, having worked with Lars von Trier and recently, Robert Eggers, just to name a couple. The duo recently teamed up for the 2014 film (which is finally hitting US soil this year), “Pasolini.”
The film stars Dafoe alongside Cristina Chiriac and Anna Ferrara.
“Tommaso” has been selected as a special screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with worldwide distribution not yet announced.
Here’s the synopsis:
TOMMASO is the story of an American artist living in Rome with his young European wife Nikki and their 3 year old daughter, Dee Dee. A work concerning imagination.
