It should come as no surprise that Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise like to collaborate on films. After multiple successful ventures, including the two best “Mission: Impossible” films, “Jack Reacher,” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” McQuarrie seems to enjoy writing (and sometimes directing) for Cruise. And it doesn’t appear that’s going to end anytime soon, as Cruise says that McQuarrie is back for some “Top Gun” action.
In a new interview with Empire, Cruise and McQuarrie talk about their work together, specifically regarding the 2018 hit “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” and that’s when the actor drops a bit of an exclusive — McQuarrie is helping write “Top Gun: Maverick,” the upcoming sequel to the popular ‘80s action film.

Now, before we go celebrate in the streets at the prospect of the writer and star collaborating on another action film, let’s remember that not everything the duo spawns is gold. Just last year, McQuarrie wrote the script for the Tom Cruise film “The Mummy.” That film was set to kickstart the entire Dark Universe of horror films but was a critical and box office failure.
So, is “Top Gun: Maverick” destined for greatness or another ‘Mummy?’ It’s far too early to tell. However, even with the imperfect track record, no film would ever be completely hurt by the inclusion of McQuarrie in the scripting phase. Let’s just hope he wrote in another awesome volleyball scene, right?
“Top Gun: Maverick” is filming now and is set to be released June 26, 2020.
In the meantime, let’s revisit one of the most infamous scenes in the original film, the aforementioned volleyball scene:
