It has been a long year for “Dark Night,” but a rewarding one for the small indie movie that debuted in January at the Sundance Film Festival (read our review). Since its reception in Park City, the film has been busy hitting festivals around the world including AFI Fest, Venice Film Festival, and RIDM. Now, it’s finally headed to arthouses, and it’s one not to miss.

Directed by Tim Sutton (“Memphis,” “Pavilion“), starring Robert Jumper, Anna Rose Hopkins, Rosie Rodriguez, Karina Macias, Aaron Purvis, and Eddie Cacciola, and featuring a score by the terrifically talented Maica Armata, the drama unfolds over one summer night where tragedy soon becomes a bracing reality. A haunting, artfully understated critique of American gun culture, Tim Sutton’s third feature is loosely based around the 2012 massacre in Aurora, Colorado that took place during a multiplex screening of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Employing a mesmerizing documentary-style technique and a cast of non-professional actors, DARK NIGHT follows the activities of six strangers over the course of one day, from sunrise to midnight, the shooter among them.
