Olivier Dahan made a star out of Marion Cotillard directing her to Oscar glory in “La vie en rose” where she played Edith Piaf, and he seems set to do the same with Renée Zellweger in his forthcoming English language feature debut, “My Own Love Song.”
In advance of the film’s theatrical release in France and international premiere in late April, French distributors Mars Distribution have posted a trailer and two eye-opening clips from the film. The film almost seems to play like a female-centered “Crazy Heart” but with a distinctly grittier, more Southern feel. We’re not sure what to make of Whitaker’s role as the stuttering, ghost whispering best friend but we hope its more well rounded than what we see in the trailer. That said we’re definitely surprised by Zellweger’s turn here. She really seems to have done her homework and plaudits seem all but inevitable at this point.
Here’s the synopsis that we’ve pulled together using both the Tribeca Film Festival and Mars Distribution descriptions:
In his English-language debut, Olivier Dahan sculpts a hyper-stylized and uplifting road movie about family, perseverance, and redemption. Becoming disabled in an accident, wheelchair-bound Jane (Renée Zellweger) is a fiercely independent ex-singer whose tough exterior hides a secret that has paralyzed her emotional life and career. When her zany neighbor Joey (Forest Whitaker) receives a letter from her long lost son and forces them to skip town, Jane must change her tune. Despite her fears to find her son after all these years and face her past, this journey across the United States and people they meet on the road help Jane compose the most beautiful love song. With songs performed by Zellweger and original music by Bob Dylan.
As we previously reported, Dylan has one confirmed new song in the film, “Life Is Hard” (that you can hear Zellweger sing during the tail end of the trailer) which we think is a safe guess will be the triumphant “Crazy Heart” of this film. No word yet on what songs from Dylan might be on the rest of the soundtrack, but as our own contrib says, the song from the trailer is “Precious Angel” from the album Slow Train Coming.
“My Own Love Song” opens in France on April 7th and will make its international premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in late April. There is no U.S. distributor currently in place but we’re sure that will change shortly.
