Great horror movie trailers hope to evoke real fear in their audience. Many horror films, even those that are really good, have lackluster trailers. Who would have thought that the best horror trailer this year would come from a documentary? The trailer for “Rats” arrived this week, and the footage is enough to make your skin crawl and keep you up at night.

From the fast cutting of rats attacking and jumping around, to the close-ups of the parasites that live inside of their little bodies, there’s enough material in the 2 ½ minute trailer to make your stomach turn. Directed by veteran documentarian Morgan Spurlock, “Rats” is his examination of the rat epidemic in cities around the world. There’s a tone that is used in this film that isn’t seen very much in documentaries, let alone docs about animal life. The dimly lit interviews and the graphic imagery make this film look like it was directed by Eli Roth.
Spurlock is venturing into new territory with “Rats.” Without a doubt, this film is a departure for the creator behind “Super Size Me” and “Mansome.” Are audiences ready for a film that shows you that these rodents are everywhere and perhaps even in your toilet? Brave people will be able to see this film at midnight screenings in select cities on September 23rd and 24th, and on the Discovery Channel starting October 22nd.
