'Treasure Island' Set For A Big Screen Makeover

You can probably guess how we feel about this so we’re not going to waste too much time on it, but UK-based Ecosse Films have announced they will be adapting Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” for the big screen.

As you might guess, Ecosse honchos Douglas Rae and Robert Bernstein want to “update” the story for today’s filmgoer which will mean writing Long John Silver as “hipper, in the style of Robert Downey Jr’s interpretation of ‘Sherlock Holmes.'” Sigh. Tasked with this job is scribe Niall Johnson whose most notable credit is the Michael Keaton ghost flick, “White Noise,” from a few years back.

Ecosse are mostly noted for their low-key films like “Brideshead Revisited,” “Becoming Jane” and “The Water Horse” but you can bet that if they can find the cash, they are going to 3D the hell out of this thing. There’s no word yet if any cross-promotion deals with Long John Silver’s have been put in place yet but we’re sure some young hotshot at the fast food chain is already on it.
